ONLY one in three Daily Post readers backed outspoken North Wales Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom in our special phone poll last night. The controversial police chief has been under attack for an alleged obsessive crackdown on speeding motorists, calls to legalise drugs, and trendy policing methods. Yesterday more than 4,500 readers phoned to vote, with 3,307 saying they did not think Mr Brunstrom was doing a good job, while 1,208 backed him. And voters online at www.icnorthwales.co.uk voted 63.33pc against, and 36.67 for. Reacting to the results of the Daily Post poll Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom said last night: "I recognise the controversy around our policing strategy in North Wales, particularly on speed enforcement. "Once again I emphasise that Arrive Alive is about saving lives not making money. "Also it's just a small part of our overall effort in solving and reducing crime, tackling the yob culture and deploying more local officers. "I acknowledge the results of the poll and will consider this in reviewing our policies. "North Wales Police has a superb workforce whose commitment, courage and resourcefulness are astonishing. "I am sure the vast majority of people appreciate that as I do." In an impassioned defence of his boss in the Daily Post yesterday, Assistant Chief Constable Clive Wolfendale urged the North Wales public to "support your local sheriff". The chairman of North Wales Police Authority, Malcolm King, also gave a vote of confidence yesterday to his under-fire top cop. |
