Aug 2003: hits the national headlines again for his tough line on speeding as an-duty ambulanceman is booked.

July 2003: defends force after figures show burglary detection rates for one month had fallen to an all-time low.

July 2003: launches an astonishing attack on a North Wales pensioner caught speeding. Branded the retired bank manager "a liar" and released video footage at a press conference.

May 2003: an Anglesey shopkeeper held up at gunpoint is unable to get help as hundreds of 999 calls go unanswered on a busy weekend. Police blame a "technical" fault.

Jan 2003: admits he would ignore speeding on the A55 unless drivers were doing 120mph.

Jan 2003: members of North Wales Police Authority warn Brunstrom he is in danger of losing public sympathy by targeting motorists.

Oct 2002: faces a backlash from his own senior officers over proposed changes to working conditions.

Sep 2002: Conwy County Council leader Ronnie Hughes blasts Brunstrom for picking on drivers.

Aug 2002: hits headlines again as North Wales becomes the first force in Britain to launch a telephone support line for gay and lesbian officers.

Aug 2002: Home Office minister John Denham blasts Brunstrom's views on legalising drugs.
