Nuclear timetable could be used for terrorism

Sep 29 2003

By Gareth Bicknell, Daily Post

TERRORISTS could target a train carrying nuclear waste across North Wales using a timetable bought across the counter, it was claimed last night.

North Wales AMs have slammed the trainspotters' magazine for publishing information about a train carrying highly dangerous radioactive material.

Freightmaster magazine contains sensitive information about trains transporting nuclear waste from Wylfa power station, sparking fears it could be used by terrorists in an attack.

Politicians say the magazine, which can be bought over the counter for £11.75, could be in breach of the 2001 Anti-terrorism Act as it contains times and dates of the train, which travels from Valley to Sellafield in Cumbria.

On a page about Colwyn Bay the magazine also states specifically the train carries "nuclear flasks".

North Wales AM Janet Ryder blasted Freightmaster for "adding an extra burden to the fight against terrorism".

She also criticised British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) for transporting the hazardous nuclear waste by rail instead of taking it to the Cumbria reprocessing plant by sea.

Ms Ryder said: "We don't want information like that being made public.

"There are two issues here.

The first is that we don't want times of trains carrying nuclear waste being published.

"The second is that we don't want material like that being shipped through North Wales," she said."

North Wales AM Brynle Williams said the publication of specific information about nuclear waste trains was "extremely frightening".

Martin Buck, managing editor of Freightmaster, said: "We contacted the Home Office after September 11 and were told we were okay to keep publishing the times."
