Fuel rebel's speed demo

Oct 27 2003

By Gareth Hughes Daily Post

A SERIES of large-scale demonstrations has been threatened unless North Wales Police scale down their campaign against speeding motorists.

And organisers of the protests have warned that they are likely to cause more disruption than the fuel blockades of two years ago.

Yesterday, Rhuddlan businessman Mark Francis told the Daily Post: "Enough is enough, and people have had a belly-full of what is happening."

Mr Francis, who has a crane-hire business, was involved in the fuel protests, but says the latest dispute is non-political.

"It is aimed mainly at one man - Richard Brunstrom - who seems obsessed with catching motorists at the expense of other policing," he said.

"The campaign is having a terrible effect on North Wales in many different ways.

"The tourism industry is going to be badly affected because there is no doubt that people will stop coming to North Wales. It is already happening among motorcyclists, some of whom are boycotting the area, and that has a knock-on effect for garages, cafes and so on.

"North Wales Police are alienating the public, which is a dangerous thing to do, and it is all because of the brainchild of Mr Brunstrom, who called speeders 'mindless thugs'. If this is allowed to carry on it will bring North Wales to its knees.

"Officers no longer have any discretion. People are being booked for doing only 3-5mph over the limit, and I know of someone booked twice in one day for doing just over the limit on big, wide country roads," he said.

Mr Francis said his campaign was gathering support a ong employers across the region.

The first step, however, will be to call a public meeting to which MPs, AMs, local authorities and Mr Brunstrom himself will be invited. It is expected to be held next month in the Colwyn Bay or Llandudno area.

"If Mr Brunstrom does not want to listen to the public he must face the consequences," said Mr Francis.

Asked what form the protests could take, he insisted that they would be peaceful.

Acting Chief Supt Geraint Anwyl said they had not been been informed about the public meeting, but added: "The partnership is always eager to enter into meaningful dialogue regarding the safety camera scheme which is in force in all police force areas in Wales and England apart from one."
