Boy, 12, up in court over summer riots

Jan 15 2004

By Elwyn Roberts, Daily Post

A 12-YEAR-OLD boy was among nine people who indicated guilty pleas yesterday to violent disorder during last summer's so-called Wrexham riots.

Ten people have been charged following a further round of arrests by North Wales Police after officers viewed CCTV film taken at the time.

Nine of the defendants appeared at a preliminary hearing at Mold Crown Court yesterday and all indicated guilty pleas.

A 16-year-old boy denied an additional charge of being involved with a petrol bomb and his case was adjourned to be reviewed by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Vaughan Powell, 21, of St David's Cres-cent, Wrexham; Mark Lawrence, 23, of Gwenfro, Wrexham, and Ashley Lucas Powell, 18, of Montgomery Road, Wrexham, admitted violent disorder together with two youths 17, two youths aged 16, a boy of 15 and the boy aged 12.

Judge Huw Daniel issued a warrant for the arrest of a 14-year-old boy who failed to attend the hearing.

The judge said they would all be sentenced at Mold Crown Court on March 15 before Judge Roger Dutton, who had already sentenced a number of people in connection with the disturbances on the Caia Park Estate.

Dozens of people were arrested and charged after two nights of violence in June.

The first night saw a brutal clash between locals and Iraqi Kurd refugees who attacked the local Red Dragon pub on Prince Charles Road where a christening party was underway.

The next day running battles broke out with police involving around 200 locals, including youths who threw petrol bombs.

Many refugees left the estate too scared to go back.

Extra riot police were drafted in to stop a third night of violence.

Detectives then embarked on a massive CCTV trawl to hunt down the troublemakers.

In the following months, dozens were arrested and charged with a range of offences including violent disorder.

In October 24 rioters were sentenced to a total of 57 years individual terms in prison of up to four years.

Investigations followed to find out why the violence erupted.

More police have since been out on the beat after it was revealed a specialist team looking after the estate was axed to just one officer.
