Diver defends quarry advice

Jan 15 2004

Daily Post

THE man behind the world's largest diving website said on-line advice about a North Wales quarry was meant to be helpful.

Fifty-metre deep Bryn Hall, near Bethesda, contains the unrecovered body of a diver, and is said to be strewn with barbed wire and unexploded bombs.

Yet details of the quarry have been posted on the bulletin board at www.ukdiving.co.uk.

It is billed as an alternative to the Dorothea Quarry in Snowdonia, which has claimed the lives of six enthusiasts in two years.

But Philip Osmond, of UK Diving Ltd, said he believed the comments were posted to inform divers of potential dangers.

He said: "I think the person who made the comment is genuinely seeking to be helpful. The forum is punctuated by comments highlighting the dangers of this quarry."

He added: "We have a policy not to censor comments but do remove anything that promotes bad diving practice," he said.

A diver, calling himself "Sheepboy", wrote of Bryn Hall: "The place is deep, dark, full of rubbish, barbed wire all over the place, dead sheep, cars and unexploded bombs, not forgetting the poor soul that is still in there."

The disused quarry, owned by Penrhyn Estates, has been fenced off several times.
