LOCAL councillors are to continue pressing for the proposed bypass of Tremadog to be extended to include both Glanmorfa and Penmorfa. And they have vowed to continue their campaign until this is achieved. The issue was raised yet again at a meeting of Porthmadog Town Council after members were told that the National Assembly does not consider such an extension as being a priority. A letter from the Assembly's highways division made it clear that there are no plans to include Glanmorfa and Penmorfa, stressing that the work already carried out to improve the A487 beyond Penmorfa was sufficient. The only commitment is for a bypass of Tremadog, fro m Bodawen Corner to a point near Ysgol y Gorlan, with work expected to start in 2008, stated the letter writer. At a meeting of the Town Council in November National Assembly highways officer Andy Cochran told members indicated that the Glanmorfa/Penmorfa section was not under consideration. "My advice is if you want the proposed bypass extended to include Glanmorfa and Penmorfa, then keep on putting pressure on Ministers in the National Assembly," said Mr Cochran then. And this is what members of the Town Council intend doing, with the clerk instructed to write a strong letter to the National Assembly's Transport Minister emphasising the need for such a bypass. Cllr Jean Edwards said: "With heavy traffic having increased considerably in recent months, the section of trunk road through Glanmorfa and Penmorfa is bordering on being a death trap, a situation that is totally unacceptable. "It is ridiculous that potential accidents along this stretch of road are being ignored, bearing in mind the improvements carried out further along the road in the direction of Dolbenmaen, and the proposed Tremadog bypass. "The numbers of heavy lorries have increased considerably in recent months making life verydifficult indeed for the residents, who deserve better." |
