Anger as arsonists destroy classroom

Feb 16 2007

Flintshire Chronicle, Llandudno

A MOBILE classroom for special needs pupils has been devastated in an arson attack.

The blaze occurred at Ysgol Gwynedd Primary School in Flint last Friday night.

Two fire crews attended about 11.30pm by which time the classroom was engulfed in flames.

Headteacher Jeremy Griffiths was furious about the attack.

He said: 'This was mindless vandalism. The facility was used by up to 50 pupils requiring extra tuition.

'Our teacher has been so busy helping pupils with specialist resources.

'Thousands of pounds worth of equipment, including two computers, have been lost.'

Chris Nott, of North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, believes the recent spate of deliberate fires is usinguplifesavingresourceswhich could be required elsewhere.

'Arson attacks increase the possibility of fatalities and place fire-fighters in considerable danger,' he said.

'We must work together to stamp this out and make the perpetrators realise the consequences of their actions.

'The school had recently spent money to improve the special needs facilities. These resources have all been lost.'

Mr Griffiths is now arranging for special tuition to be incorporated within the main classes.

He thought it would be difficult but added: 'We've had a lot of support from the council and are already reordering items.

'Wewilleventuallyhavetosetupa new base for additional teaching.'

North Wales Police attended the

scene and a spokeswoman said: 'Our enquiries are ongoing.'
