Appeal blow for furious villagers

Feb 16 2007

By Clare Hickie, Flintshire Chronicle

CAMPAIGNERS who celebrated after plans for a £10m leisure complex were rejected now fear the decision will be overturned.

Proposals to transform Kinsale nine-hole golf course, in Llanerchymor, near Mostyn, into a holiday village with 78 lodges, a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, crèche, tennis court and nature trails was refused by Flintshire planning committee last July.

But applicants Kinsale Golf and Leisure are disputing the decision and appealing to the Welsh Assembly Government inspectorate. The claim was lodged just a couple of weeks before the six month deadline.

Villagers who protested against the plans only found out about the move when they received letters from Flintshire County Council.

Ian Davies, a farmer who lives next to Kinsale Golf Club, says it is worrying many of his neighbours and they are planning to

hold a meeting.

He said: 'It will spoil the whole character of the area. The impact on the countryside would be terrific. They are hooking it onto the back of that nine-hole golf course which nobody uses.'

Concerns are also being raised that villagers will not be able to defend their case

as the inspector will make a decision based on letters of objection.

Cllr Patrick Heesom is writing to the Assembly inspectorate to demand the matter is decided in an open hearing.

He is also believes the application cannot be granted because it is too closely linked to approved plans for neighbouring Kinsale Hall Hotel to be converted into a residential school for young people with autism.

'It's absolutely absurd,' he said. 'The nine hole golf course application is unsustainable.'

A company spokesman said: 'Kinsale Golf & Leisure Ltd has appealed because they were dismayed by the council planning committee's refusal of permission in spite of the firm recommendation of approval by officers.

'They continue to believe, as do representatives of the local tourism industry, that their scheme will bring significant benefits to the local area. The delay in submitting the appeal was primarily due to the consultants' workload and not the company's responsibility.' clare.hickie@cheshirenews.co.uk
