Armed raiders wield knives in pub attack

Feb 16 2007

By Rachel Barrows, Flintshire Chronicle

ARMED robbers terrified a female worker after forcing their way into the Glasfryn pub in Mold - the fifth attack in a spate of raids on licensed premises across Flintshire.

A licensing official has now warned tragedy could strike unless the raiders are caught soon.

The three hooded men smashed a window and entered the Glasfryn brandishing knives and a gun shortly before 2am on Monday.

The villains, who wore balaclavas, threatened the woman and demanded cash from the safe. But left empty-handed after being disturbed.

The woman worker, who has not been named, was left deeply shocked by the attempted robbery, but was not injured.

The Raikes Lane eatery was shut on Monday as detectives and forensics teams worked at the scene.

Police are trying to establish whether the incident is linked to four other robberies in the county since last September.

And there have been 11 armed robberies in Chester and surrounding areas since December.

But North Wales Police and Cheshire detectives do not believe there is a link.

A Cheshire Constabulary spokesman said: 'There is a possibility three or four gangs could be operating across Cheshire and North Wales.'

Cllr Tony Sharps, chairman of Flintshire County Council's licensing committee, said: 'It is high time these robbers were caught.

'Lives are in danger. I have never known anything like this in Flintshire. What I'm worried about is that a landlord will take the law into his own hands and something terrible will happen.

'Licensees need to make sure security is in place for their premises and staff, especially out of town pubs.'

Pub and restaurant chain Brunningham and Price, which owns the Glasfryn, declined to make any comment saying the matter was in the hands of North Wales Police.

Nikos Solakis, landlord of the Griffin Inn, Mynydd Isa for 11 years, said: 'It is very worrying. This is not just one or two robberies and the police don't seem to have a clue who is doing them.' nAnyone with any information relating to the incident at the Glasfryn or any of the other robberies should contact the police on 0845 6071001 (Welsh language line) or 0845 6071002 (English language line).
