Drivers back speed traps ANOTHER survey shows the majority of motorists do in fact support schemes to catch speeding drivers - especially women. HPI, which carries out checks on vehicles for buyers, says their survey shows 80% of women and 63% of men believe speed cameras are effective. In addition, 55% of women think there should be more of them. Nearly half the men polled, compared to just 13% of women, slow down when they spot a camera. HPI also found that the majority of men (56%) would like to see an increase in the visibility of speed cameras in an effort to make them more effective. As for the best speeding deterrents, women favoured speed humps, which received over 75% of the votes, whilst men were divided between speed humps (33%) and speed cameras (38%). None of the women thought a campaign to educate drivers would act as a deterrent, whereas 19% of men supported this idea. Bikers' danger zone ONE of the 10 most dangerous roads in the UK for motorcyclists is in North Wales - the A534 from the Welsh border to Nantwich. The A537 leading to the small spa town of Buxton is named as Britain's worst death-trap for motorcyclists. * Motorcyclists were 30 times more likely to die in crashes than car drivers. * Motorcyclists made up one in six of all road deaths - despite riding only 1% of all miles travelled. * Of the 3431 people killed on British roads in 2002, 609 were on motorcycles, scooters or mopeds. * Four out of 10 biker fatalities are at junctions, another four out of 10 died on bends. * About 60% of bikers died on roads outside built-up areas. |
