A WOMAN given a one in 10 chance of surviving cancer was last night planning a fund-raising event to mark beating the disease. Jennifer Horsford, from Holyhead, refused to undergo a major operation when doctors found a lump the size of a large fingernail blocking her oesophagus - between her throat and stomach.. Without surgery, involving lifting her stomach and manipulating her ribs, she was given just a one in 10 chance of pulling through. Instead, she decided to undergo intensive chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. Now four years on and after defying the odds, she is determined to mark her 68th birthday in style. She was mastermind behind a major tourism initiative, the Holyhead Breakwater Railway Company, set up to reopen a rail link, skirting the port's outer harbour, with the Breakwater Country Park. Jennifer helped to bring in the colourful train, which has carried 2,500 passengers since it began less than two months ago. |
