Mattel spokesperson Gylla Kelley said the company is hoping for a Christmas rush

She added: "Scrabble is a favourite all over the world.

"We aim to meet the demands of all the game's fans and we are more than happy that Welsh-speaking word lovers can now join in."

Welsh language minister and Clwyd West AM Alun Pugh said: "Scrabble is a game that is enjoyed by many millions of people around the world.

"The news that the game will be available in Welsh is another example of how the Welsh language is being mainstreamed into daily life - it also opens up a whole new range of possibilities for the maximum word score!"

The highest-scoring English word is the chemical benzoxycamphors, scoring an incredible 1,970 - if it is placed along the treble scores.

But as players are allowed to use seven tiles only, the maximum scores in English from the start of the game are squeezy and quartzy - both 126.

The Welsh version includes one letter J - commonly used with words such as jam and jiws - but does not include the circumflex (tô bach) which would have made the game more complicated.
