'I felt like a rat in a lab'

Feb 16 2007

By Lois Bishop, Flintshire Chronicle

A DEESIDE woman undergoing hospital treatment for a knee problem has criticised her consultation saying she felt like a 'lab rat.'

Becky Griffiths, 23, has had hyper-extension in her knees since she was 12 and her feet turn slightly inwards, causing her knees to dislocate.

She visited Wrexham Maelor Hospital's artificial limb unit to be fitted with insoles for her shoes.

But Becky, of Rowden Street, Shot-ton, was shocked at her treatment.

She claims she was taken into an examining room where three members of staff were drinking tea, chatting and coats and car keys were strewn on equipment.

Becky, a room leader at a day nursery in Saughall, Chester, said there were diaries left open on the floor and the person examining her did not introduce herself.

'She said we have lost your notes, got a piece of scrap paper, asked why I was there and put it on top of a filing cabinet, it was really unprofessional. Nobody seemed to know what they were doing,' claims Becky.

Becky says there were bin bags strewn about the floor and empty cups around the room.

She said: 'Another lady came in, didn't introduce herself and started pulling at my feet. I feel like a rat in a lab.

'Another person came in and was saying 'oh let's have a look', I felt like I was an experiment.'

Becky, who normally attends the Countess of Chester Hospital, is due for another check up in Wrexham shortly, but is reluctant to attend.

A spokesman for North East Wales NHS Trust said: 'We are sorry to hear Miss Griffiths was disappointed with the manner of her appointment.

'We know the notes for that clinic were delayed in arriving and are looking into the reasons for that.

'We will also be reminding staff of the importance of respecting patient privacy and not interrupting consultations.'
