Yesterday he visited many of the 57 polling stations around the constituency which stretches from Barmouth in the south to Penrhyndeudraeth and Trefriw in the north. Mr Llwyd said: "I've visited more than 30 polling booths today and most of them were reporting high turn-outs." With an electorate of 33,000, Mr Llwyd had 10,459 votes in 2001 for a majority of 27%. * Labour's Mark Tami is defending 26% majority in ALYN AND DEESIDE but as the ballot papers were being totted up in Alyn and Deeside last night, the constituency's most colourful candidate was taking centre stage. Judith Kilshaw, who became infamous when she and her husband adopted American twins over the internet in 2001, was standing as an independent candidate. Mrs Kilshaw, who campaigned under a "no corruption" banner said: "If I win they will all need oxygen in there." Dressed conservatively in black trousers, waistcoat and a white blouse, she was being followed by a Channel 4 film crew at last night's count . In neighbouring DELYN too, the turnout was above average, coming in at 64.06% In Delyn, Labour's David Hanson is defending a 24.8% majority in the 2001 election. * VOTING was described as "steady" in the CAERNARFON consituency last night. Early voters in the Plaid Cymru-held seat included party president Dafydd Iwan at Bontnewydd near Caernarfon. While most cast their votes in schools or chapels, voters in Prenteg near Porthmadog used an old mobile library van. Hywel Williams, who succeeded long-serving MP Dafydd Wigley at the 2001 general election, spent yesterday visiting every one of the 80 polling stations in the consituency. He said: "We've had a good campaign and I'm fairly confident. Our canvassing suggests we are stronger in the town of Caernarfon this time round." ELECTORS in WREXHAM and CLWYD SOUTH cast their ballot papers at 110 polling stations last night. Labour candidates Ian Lucas, for Wrexham, and Martyn Jones, for Clwyd South, were looking to be re-elected to their safe seats when the counting began at Newi College. |
