Four years ago Eleri went into kidney failure and, because of her various problems, her body did not respond to dialysis, so, without hesitation, June donated one of her kidneys. "It was a truly amazing, selfless thing to do," said Olive. Never knowing whether it would be her last, June made every birthday special for Eleri and one Christmas dressed up as Mr Blobby, her daughter's favourite character. Last year, Eleri, a pupil at Ysgol Tir Morfa, Rhyl, competed in the transplant games at Alton Towers and June sought sponsorship to enable the games to continue to be held. Eleri's sister Lowri, now 18, has also been very supportive throughout her illness and accompanied her on many visits to London. She is now a student nurse at Great Ormond Street. In nominating June her mum Olive referred to her care, perseverance and sense of humour. "Giving life is a wonderful thing, and June has done this twice for Eleri, firstly by giving birth and secondly by giving her a kidney," said Olive. June and the other regional finalists were chosen by a panel which included GMTV presenter Lorraine Kelly. Next week they will be treated to a three-night stay in London and celebrity meals at the Savoy. Viewers of GMTV will be asked to vote for the eventual winner, who will receive a holiday for four plus £1,000 spending money, and £4,000 to be spent at ASDA. "Apparently there were thousands of nominations so I haven't done badly to get to this stage," said a modest June. |
