Mum calls for dog that bit her child to be destroyed

Feb 16 2007

By Clare Hickie, Flintshire Chronicle

A MUM whose daughter was savaged by a dog says she wants the animal destroyed.

The nine-year-old was permanently scarred when the collie-cross bit her in the face.

Jane Hughes, of Caerwys, contacted the Chronicle after hearing about 10-year-old Ashley Farn-worth, who suffered a similar attack in Trelogan earlier this month and needed 30 stitches.

Ashley was bitten by American bulldog Bella, which a family friend had acquired from the North Clwyd Animal Rescue at Trelogan and which had been returned to the charity for rehoming.

Ashley's parents said they would not rest until the dog was destroyed.

Mrs Hughes' daughter, Georgia, was eight when she visited a relative in the Denbigh area last October and met the collie-cross he had taken in from the Trelogan charity.

When Georgia bent down to stroke the dog, he 'latched on' to her face.

'Georgia now has two puncture marks on her right cheek,' Mrs Hughes said. 'He shook her like a rag doll.

'She didn't have stitches but her face is marked. At the time, she could hardly see out of her right eye - it was just horrendous.

'What would have happened if it had been a younger child, or if my partner had not been there? A dog which has bitten a child should never be rehomed.'

Anne Owen, trustee of the rescue charity, said: 'We take these things into consideration when rehoming.'

The dog has been living with a trainer, who had not encountered any problems.

'We operate a non-destruction policy,' said Anne. 'The only exceptions are dogs which prove too aggressive to rehome.'
