Nubain is a powerful analgesic while Diazemuls is a sedative with anxiety-relieving effects. A subsequent appeal against the disciplinary panel's decision was thrown out. His case went before the HPC, which concluded last month he breached seven of its codes of conduct. Christine Mills, who chaired the HPC, panel, said: "In reaching its decision the panel has taken into account the medical evidence, the fact that the events occurred two years ago and the fact that Mr Widdowson now deeply regrets his actions and wishes to continue in practice as a paramedic. "However, the panel cannot ignore the fact that Mr Widdowson's misconduct whilst on duty could have had potentially serious consequences to patients, members of the public, colleagues and Mr Widdowson himself. "In particular his ability to assess and treat patients would have been impaired whilst under the influence of drugs as would his ability to drive safely. "The events also had the potential to bring the paramedic profession into dis-repute. "Accordingly, the panel finds that Mr Widdowson's fitness to practise is impaired and therefore that the allegation is well founded." |
