"European geoparks are areas with an extra-special geological heritage. The designation is a prestigious one, and membership gives automatic member-ship of Unesco's global network of national geoparks. "Anglesey is an ideal candidate to become a European geopark because it has a unique, fascinating and diverse geology that includes some of the oldest rocks in the world at about 660 million years old. "In geological terms, Anglesey is like the world on a pocket handkerchief, such is its diversity of rocks in such a small area." The partnership is also planning to set up a young geologists' club, and to hold a Geopark Week next year. Meanwhile, it is looking for a place where the group can meet, hold events, store educational and promotional material, and display local crafts. * Anybody who can help or is interested in the group can contact Dr Wood on 01248 810287, email margaret@coleg10.freeserve.co.uk or the Anglesey Geodiversity Partnership, c/o Menter Môn, Llys Goferydd, Bryn Cefni Industrial Estate, Llangefni, LL77 7XA, tel. 01248 725700, email leah@mentermon.com. |
