Newport MP Paul Flynn stayed to listen to what the protesters had to say. He said afterwards: "It's perhaps not the best way to put their claim forward." Earlier members of Cymru X, Plaid Cymru's youth wing, staged a protest over the government's intentions to replace the current Trident nuclear weapons system at an estimated cost of £25bn. Cymru Xdemanded taxpayers' money should be spent on public services and not on weapons of mass destruction. They marched from the Plaid Cymru stall to stands of political parties who support the weapons upgrade. Wearing nuclear protection suits they "cordoned off" each stall to show the deadly hazard of developing Trident. Plaid MP Adam Price, who accompanied the protesters, said: "The question has to be asked who exactly are we going to be using these weapons of mass destruction against? "National security has moved on from the cold war but unfortunately it seems New Labour have failed to grasp that vast expenditure on weapons systems of this sort will do nothing to protect the people of Wales from the security challenges which face us." Mabon ap Gwynfor of Cymru X added: "We are campaigning to show Plaid Cymru offers an alternative viewpoint to the London-centred parties." |
