Ms Dishon said she was alerted by locals. She said many were concerned about the future of the hall which - before the blaze - was at the centre of a controversial planning application. Colwyn Bay-based SFJ Ltd wanted to convert the hall into a luxury country hotel and build 90 wooden chalets in the grounds. SFJ managing director John Rochelle said: "Three carvings and part of another carving had been removed by thieves ready for collection, so SFJ took immediate action and placed them in safe-keeping. "The carvings will be replaced when the building is restored." Mr Rochelle added: "The Victorian Society has no right to be on the site - they are continually breaching health and safety regulations. "By contacting the media about the carvings they are, in effect, advertising the presence of works of art in the building to other potential thieves." * John Gibson was born in Gyffin, Conwy, in 1790. After the family moved to Liverpool, he trained in Rome. Five of the reliefs from Hafodunos are on display in Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery. |
