He said: "It happened about two miles into the stage. The car may have hit a rock or something and went over on to its side and hit a tree. Then the car went down a 20ft bank. "Spectators rang the emergency services while others ran to help. The roll bar had partially collapsed trapping the two in the car but the rally officials were quickly on scene." Oil leaking from the car engine onto a hot exhaust started a small fire which was extinguished by officials. Fire crews from Corwen and Wrexham were joined by paramedics and police officers. The Wales Air Ambulance was called in to airlift the two to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan. A North Wales Police spokeswoman said the incident was under investigation. North Wales Car Club spokeswoman Amanda Madoc-Jones said: "Luckily neither the driver nor the co-driver were badly injured. We have been to see them in hospital to deliver flowers and get well cards and I'm sure they will be released from hospital later." The rally was eventually won by Colwyn Bay crew of Andrew Burton and John Roberts. . Four years ago five people, including three children, were seriously injured when a rally car crashed into them during a stage of the Cambrian Rally on the Great Orme. Organisers claimed none of the victims were standing at an official spectator point. The driver from Pembrokeshire was uninjured in the incident. An inquiry into the incident by the Motor Sports Association recommended fans should be "educated" about safety before rally events. |
