Where can travellers go?

Feb 16 2007

By George Tattum , Flintshire Chronicle

A COUNTY-WIDE search has been launched for a temporary transit camp for itinerants.

And sites in Buckley and Flint have been pencilled in as potential locations.

About 15 itinerant families set up camp on the Antelope Industrial Estate, Rhydymwyn, after the county council successfully gained a court order to evict them from a site in Greenfield.

But it is understood the authority is unlikely to be as successful in another court battle to move them on unless it can offer travellers an alternative temporary site for 28 days.

The council has not issued a list of potential sites but it is known land on Globe Way,

Buckley, and at the former Courtaulds' Castle Works site, near the railway line in Flint, are being considered.

The fact Globe Way is in the reckoning has infuriated Harry Spencer, who runs the nearby industrial estate. He says itinerants could create serious security issues for businesses on the estate - and up to 300 jobs could be put at risk.

Cllr Alex Aldridge, of Flint, said any move to open a site in the town would be totally unacceptable.

He said: 'I would personally oppose the move.

'You cannot put a camp like that in any populated area or where there are businesses.

'The conflict would be immense and I can say implacably I would oppose the move and so would the people of Flint.'

Council leader Aaron Shotton confirmed a list of potential sites was being drawn up but declined to give details.

'We are looking at council-owned land throughout Flintshire,' he said.

'We want a site for a temporary transit camp.

'The long-term solution to finding a permanent site is, in my opinion, a North Wales-wide issue.' george.tattum@cheshirenews.co.uk
