'I've just got to live with it' FORMER Ferodo worker and married father-of-two Alan Davies, 60, was diagnosed as an asbestos sufferer in 1997. He has pleural thickening after inhaling asbestos fibres into his lungs, which often leaves him breathless. Alan, of Llanrug, Caernarfon said: "I've just got to live with it and hope it doesn't get worse." He gave up work in 1979 and was the first of around 15 workers at Caernarfon to successfully claim interim damages against Ferodo owners Turner and Newell. Alan said: "Asbestos dangers did not become public until 1969. It's still present in buildings including hospitals and schools. "I worked in the storeroom.I used to distribute asbestos, measure it up and cut it before it would be rolled and baked." Former squash player Alan used to love walking up mountains and taking photographs but can't do that now because of his condition. He feels that he has been cheated, claiming that the dangers of asbestos were known many years before he was diagnosed. "Big companies kept it secret from the workers and the public," he said. Alan now hopes that his condition does not worsen so that he will have to make another claim. "I hope I won't have to depend on an oxygen bottle." |
