Mini train is big help on seafront

Oct 4 2004

By David Greenwood, Daily Post

A PLANNED waterfront tourist attraction at a North Wales port will get a massive boost today with the arrival of a 36-seater miniature passenger train

Last night the group behind the project in Holyhead insisted the train, which will be up and running from next Easter, will act as the launch pad for other major long-term developments.

"This is just the start," said Jennifer Horsford, chairwoman of Holyhead Breakwater Railway Group, formed last year.

They have bought the eight-year-old land train, which has wheelchair access, from the former Butlin's holiday camp at Pwllheli.

"Initially the land train will run from the maritime museum along the lower promenade to the breakwater.

"We are also looking at the possibility of it running from the port terminal where it can pick up ferry and cruise ship passengers.

"It is all about improving leisure facilities and restoring pride in the area's history and heritage."

The train is in good condition, said Mrs Horsford, adding: "We will have to carry out some restoration work and get an MOT specialist up from Hampshire to give it a thorough check and his approval.

"It needs news cushions, repainting and an improved hand-brake system."

Meanwhile, the company has launched a drive to recruit volunteers.

"We are looking for people who fancy becoming land train or train drivers, conductors, guards or just to help out generally," she added..

The group's long-term plans include a scenic narrow gauge railway linking historic sites and the restoration of a 1.7 mile track along the town's 131-year-old breakwater.

An old lighthouse will also be transformed into a museum.
