Volunteers needed to help run train

May 5 2005

Daily Post

A HUNT was launched yesterday for people with a passion for railways to help run a new tourist attraction at a North Wales port.

A new 36-seater land train along the beachfront in Holyhead will be launched within weeks.

And the organisers last night turned to the Daily Post in a bid to find volunteers to operate the service.

"We are looking for support staff as well as medically fit and qualified licensed drivers, conductors and guards," said Jennifer Horsford, chair of the Holyhead Breakwater Railway Company.

"We have been to the local Job Centre but they haven't got anybody on their books."

The aim is to have the all-year-round service, which will run every 90 minutes, on track by the the end of the month.

Starting from the maritime museum it will travel along the lower promenade, calling at the sailing club and marina car park, and then out towards the country park and breakwater.

The company is also looking to develop other attractions.

"The two-coach land train, which will be fitted with a PA system, is just the start," said Mrs Horsford..

"We also have plans for the Country Park Quarry's narrow gauge railway and the breakwater lighthouse."

Mrs Horsford added: "I believe it will benefit the whole town, bringing railway heritage alive. Young people in Holyhead don't even know there was a train on the breakwater, which is 132 years old this year.

"This will bring railway enthusiasts from all over the country to the town."
