A 19TH century square lighthouse in North Wales could become a new tourist attraction.

Operators of a popular land train which runs along Holyhead's mile-long breakwater, are hoping to "open-up" the lighthouse.

One of a handful in Britain, it stands at the entrance to the port's outer harbour.

The Holyhead Breakwater Railway Company is already in talks with the port's owners Stena and officials at the town's maritime museum.

HBRC chair Jennifer Horsford said: "Since we started running the land train last year people have really enjoyed the experience. At the end of the breakwater we usually give them 20 minutes to take in the views and it would be nice if they could have a look inside parts of the lighthouse.

"The idea is getting lots of support and we are hopeful."

The lighthouse was last manned in 1961.
