Big brother to keep watch on young yobs

Aug 6 2004

By Carl Butler, Daily Post

POLICE yesterday unveiled a mobile camera van - with a facility to allow parents to view their children misbehaving.

The CCTV van will be used in Wrexham and Flintshire to crack down on street yobs. It will also be deployed as part of Operation Ginger-bread to keep an eye on school premises which often become targets for vandals.

The specially-equipped Mercedes Sprinter van will contain mobile CCTV equipment.

It will also include facilities for parents to sit in the back and watch footage of what their children get up to.

Eastern divisional commander Chief Supt Phill Thomson said: "We are delighted to have received funding to purchase this vehicle. It will be well used throughout Wrexham and Flintshire and it will hopefully help to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour, especially in communities that do not currently have CCTV.

"North Wales Police, with the Wrexham and Flintshire Crime and Disorder Partnerships, is committed to tackling anti-social behaviour and ensuring that the minority of people who engage in such behaviour, whether they be young or old, are not allowed to affect the quality of life for the majority of law-abiding citizens.

"This mobile CCTV vehicle is yet another tool in our armoury to help us achieve this."

The Welsh Assembly and the Wrexham and Flintshire Crime and Disorder Partnership have funded the vehicle, which will be used in towns and villages which do not have CCTV, as well as known trouble spots.

Anti-social behaviour is one of the top priorities for North Wales Police and it wants members of the public to report any incidents by ringing 0845 607 1002.
