Flooded line back on track

A FLOOD ravaged railway line is on track to re-open on March 7.

Works to repair the Conwy Valley line are near to completion after the track was closed following heavy storms in early January.

It was the second time within 12 months the rail line had been devastated by flood water, with £5m worth of repairs carried out last year.

Yesterday Network Rail and Nuttall engineers examined two of the damaged areas of the line, within a mile of each other near Llanrwst.

The north site had 10,000 tonnes of soil and rocks washed away by the floods. It was the first time that part of the track was hit.

A digger was busy shoring up the line with rocks yesterday in preparation for its re-opening.

The south site had ballast swept by flood water into nearby fields, which had to be replaced.

But rock armour defences put in place following similar floods last year limited the damage said Nuttall deputy earthworks delivery manager Steve Gee.

A tamper machine is working its way up the line straightening kinks in the track caused by the deluge.
