Homeless binman arrested just for walking into a pub

May 31 2005

By Elwyn Roberts, Daily Post

A FORMER binman was jailed yesterday - for walking into a pub.

Homeless Eddie Jones was arrested on Sunday in the Wrexham branch of Wetherspoons before he even ordered a drink.

An anti-social behaviour order bans him from entering licensed premises in Wrexham town centre.

Jones was jailed for 30 days by Mold magistrates for breaching the order which was imposed in April.

The 53-year-old, formerly of New Brighton, near Mold, had been released from prison less than a fortnight before his arrest.

He was given a concurrent 30-day sentence for being in breach of his early release prison licence.

Sandra Subacchi, prosecuting, told the court police were called to the pub when Jones walked in.

He knew he was banned from entering licensed premises in Wrexham town centre under the terms of the Asbo.

Phillip Marshall-Thomas, defending, said his client did not lead a particularly happy life but was sorry for what he had done.

"You will no doubt have gathered that he lives rough.

"He does accept that he likes a drink.

"But that is one of his very few pleasures in life."

Jones accepted he had drunk one can of strong lager bought for him by a friend.

He went into Wetherspoons where he was arrested by police without ordering a drink.

"My client does not accept he was drunk at the time," said Mr Marshall-Thomas.

"It is fair to say that he did co-operate with the police.

"He did swear, but not at them personally.

"It is just his individual way of expressing himself.

"He got into the police vehicle without struggling.

"His sin and the reason that he appears before you in custody today is simply because he went in to licensed premises when he should not have done so.

"It is the bottom rung of the ladder." Mr Marshall-Thomas said while his client was officially of no fixed abode, he did stay in a particular shop doorway in Wrexham with the consent of the owner.
