Jailed for drinking lager on a bench

Sep 15 2006

Daily Post

A FORMER binman was yesterday jailed for six months - for having a can of lager on a bench outside a supermarket.

Eddie Jones was in breach of his anti social behaviour order, for the sixth time. Initially Judge Merfyn Hughes QC, sitting at Mold Crown Court, said he would like to see what else could be done for Jones, described as a hopeless alcoholic.

"He has a very serious alcohol problem.

"This is his sixth Asbo breach. Is the court going to keep giving him longer and longer prison sentences for opening cans of lager in the Tesco car park? What does it achieve?"

Judge Hughes put the case back for a previous pre-sentence report to be produced. But when the case was recalled, the judge said it was clear Jones was unable or unwilling to accept help.

"I will sentence him but I do so with a heavy heart."

He told Jones the Asbo was made in 2003 to deal with his alcoholism.

He breached it five times before and received rehabilitation, plus jail terms ranging from 30 days to a sentence this January of 12 months.
