Plane crash nightmare

Jul 11 2003

Stephen Lovatt being airlifted to hospital

A PILOT was fighting for his life last night after his plane smashed into a mountain in Snowdonia.

Rescuers said it was amazing that Stephen Lovatt survived the crash high above the Ogwen Valley at around 11am yesterday.

He was in a critical but stable condition in Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor last night.

Mr Lovatt, from Nottingham, was only 50ft from clearing the 3,000ft Elidir Fawr peak as he approached Caernarfon Airport.

Rescuer Al Read said last night: "He's very lucky to be alive."

Mr Read and his mountain rescue team freed Mr Lovatt from the wreckage of the single-engined Piper Tomahawk four hours after walkers raised the alarm. The crash happened in low cloud and drizzle, with visibility down to just a few yards.

The classic car dealer was said to be suffering from serious head injuries.
