Cop drove wrong way on A55

Apr 1 2004

By Sara Thomas Daily Post

Nicholas Bedford

A WITNESS yesterday told how she feared she would die during a high speed police chase on the wrong side of the A55.

Motorists were forced to swerve as North Wales PC Nicholas Bedford drove at up to 70mph chasing burglars in the wrong direction along a three-and-a-half mile stretch of the dual carriageway.

The chase was witnessed by an off-duty police driving expert who told Chester Crown Court yesterday how it left him "shaken up and upset". Bedford, 29, of Christleton, Chester, denies dangerous driving on April 20 on the A494, the A55 and the A550.

A second North Wales officer, PC Philip Wright, 37, of Whitby, Elles-mere Port, also denies dangerous driving on a section of the A55, near Alltami, Flintshire.

Neither was qualified to take part in pursuits, the court was told.

Simon Medland, prosecuting at Chester Crown Court, said: "Police officers are subject to exactly the same rules as you and I when driving. They are subject to codes of practice but they do not have carte blanche to drive as they wish."

The incident began at around 4.15am on Easter Sunday when a Flintshire County Council CCTV operator saw burglars emerging from the Boots store in Mold.

Bedford and Wright both driving Ford Focus police cars, separately became involved in a "chase or pursuit", said Mr Medland.

At the A494 crossroads with Pinfold Lane the burglars, in a white Cavalier, drove through the red traffic lights and as they approached the A55 interchange went through a "No Entry" sign to drive the wrong way up a slip road and enter the A55 where they raced eastbound on the westbound carriageway.
