'Blasphemy' on fashion firm's website

Apr 8 2004

By Stefan Jarmolowicz, Flintshire Chronicle Series

A MOLD fashion firm has caused outrage by using an image of a topless model being crucified in front of a cathedral on its website.

Gwernymynydd-based firm BDBX, which is run by 20-year-old Alec Stacey, commissioned the image (censored version above)to promote a range of designer T-shirts.

The photograph features Debbie Turpin, a former Page Three girl, on a cross in front of Liverpool's Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral.

Ms Turpin is wearing only a short skirt bearing the company's logo.

Her tortured facial expression has been compared to Jim Caviezel's portrayal of Christ in Mel Gibson's controversial film The Passion Of The Christ.

The stunt has sparked an unholy Easter Week row and has been condemned by religious leaders as 'blasphemous'.

Monsignor Peter Cookson, Roman Catholic Dean of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, said: 'It's in bad taste, disrespectful and, if you are a believer, blasphemous.

'People think they can do anything they like with religious imagery these days and I'm upset that anybody should be using a distasteful picture like this to sell their products.

'I have never seen anything as outrageous as this.

'The cross is a recognised Christian symbol and it is very tasteless.

'We would certainly not give anyone permission to take a photo-graph like this outside the cathedral, but I doubt if there is any law preventing this. It is very distressing.'

The Rev Adrian Morrin, parish priest of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Buckley, added: 'It is particularly shocking to see this kind of imagery at this time of year, which is so important to people of faith.

'In no way could such imagery be described as ambiguous. It is a determined statement designed to shock and offend.

'We have made great strides in our respect for each other's traditions and in tolerance and collaboration.

'Our lives are shaped by Christian

faith and this imagery only seeks to shock and insult all faiths. It is abjectly tasteless and deeply offensive.

'I am sure that those who are responsible for and associated with this form of design will review their presentation when they reflect on just how damaging it is.'

Mr Stacey first became interested in fashion while an apprentice at Wrexham FC.

After leaving the club, he set up his internet fashion company from his home in Gwernymyndd with the help of his dad, Brian.

He now plays for Welsh Premier League side Newi Cefn Druids.

Despite the controversy over the website, Mr Stacey is unrepentant.

He said: 'This fashion range is all about youth culture, being in-your-face, not being afraid to break the rules and challenging convention.

'The photograph reflects the rebellious nature of youth culture and I think the young people who see it will understand where we are coming from.

'Liverpool is the city of culture and BDBX is about youth culture, so I thought it was appropriate.' BOUND FOR FRANCE: The first Airbus wing for the A380 passes Connah's Quay on the River Dee. VH060404wing-05 ..SUPL:
