Mammoth hunt

Apr 16 2004

By David Greenwood, Daily Post

THE remains of an Ice Age woolly mammoth uncovered by workmen dredging a North Wales harbour 120 years ago have been "rediscovered" gathering dust in one of Britain's top museums.

Now tourism, history and heritage groups at Holyhead, are urging bosses at the Natural History Museum, in London, to "let us have our mammoth back".

The dramatic, but virtually unknown discovery, came as members of the port's Morlo Partnership turned "super-sleuth" to track down the remains to the museum's storage archive.

Partnership chairman Arwel Roberts said last night: "It is amazing to think that woolly mammoths were once roaming the area on which Holyhead now stands. It is a great pity to think of the remains lying in storage 250 miles away in London when they could be on display here."

Heritage Group chairman Ken Grey added: "We have asked the Natural History Museum for further information about the remains, and will be making an official approach to see if they can be given to us for public display locally."

The mammoth found was an Elephas Primigenius. Its bones were dredged from mud in the inner harbour during building work on the nearby railway station.

Simone Well, from the Natural History Museum, said: "We do have the mammoth from Holyhead harbour. At the moment our fossil mammals collections areas are closed due to refurbishment and I am sorry but we can't provide any more details until we get access to the collections."

The spot where the mammoth was found is now being transformed with work starting on a new pedestrian causeway crossing over the inner harbour towards the town centre.

Holyhead regeneration officer Dewi Lloyd said: "A circular central viewing area is to be provided over the dock as part of the scheme which will allow tourists panoramic views over and across the harbour.

"The mammoth discovery will now be featured in a new visitor information board scheme for the area and it would be nice to have the remains on show in Holyhead."
