Moves to increase income from Welsh rivers

May 5 2004

Daily Post

The Tan y Mynydd in Abergele is just one example of the booming angling industry across North Wales

ANGLING tourism is generating more money than ever across Wales.

But experts say the nation has the potential to get even better over the next three years.

The Environment Agency said three million regular anglers spent on average more than £1,000 a year each on tackle, travel, accommodation and meals during their fishing trips.

This in turn supported many thousands of jobs.

With fishing arguably the most popular participation sport, spending on it is estimated at over £3bn per year, with around £100m of that in Wales.

But Pat O'Reilly, of the agency's fisheries, ecology and recreation advisory committee for Wales, said rural tourism's profits could be boosted by an extra 50% with a careful approach to fisheries.

And the Wales Tourist Board has also committed itself to increasing income by 2007.

"In total the fisheries of Wales bring in over £100m a year, including rivers, lakes, sea and coarse fishing," said Mr O'Reilly. "I cannot stress enough the important tourism value of the rivers of Wales. "
