Top writers pitch in to help centre

May 18 2004

By Hywel Trewyn Daily Post

AWARD-WINNING authors are running free writing classes after a mix-up over grants.

Toe Newydd, the National Writers' Centre for Wales, should have been full of builders this summer. Instead, some of Britain's finest writers such as Philip Pullman - who grew up in North Wales - will be working there for nothing, and donating their fees to help pay for improvements.

The £2m refurbishment was due to start in July, but because of problems with grants, has been delayed until next spring.

Toe Newydd, in Llanystumdwy, near Criccieth, has to find match-funding but a mix-up surrounding Objective 1 and the Local Regeneration Fund leaves it £150,000 short.

Extra courses have now been arranged for July and August.

Children's author Jan Mark from Oxford, a frequent visitor to Toe Newydd, offered to teach a course and donate her fee to the centre's development fund appeal.

Jan said: "I've been tutoring there for years. I suggested the idea might catch on and it has"

Among the writers will be Mick Gowar, David Constantine, Twm Morys, winner of the chair at last year's National Eisteddfod last year and Mark Haddon.

The courses include writing for children, poetry and two retreats with writers in residence.

Toe Newydd director Sally Baker said: "The support of these poets and authors is an indication of the respect that exists for Toe Newydd as a literary institution."

Mr Pullman, author of His Dark Materials, was born in Norwich in 1946, and educated in England, Zimbabwe and Australia, before his family settled in North Wales.

Last year he was presented with an honorary fellowship by the University of Wales, Bangor.

Bookings are now being taken. Further details on 01766 523 237.
