Ex-Bangor chairman struck off for dishonesty

John Ross-Jones

A NORTH Wales solicitor and former Bangor City chairman was struck off yesterday amid allegations of dishonesty.

John Ross-Jones, 59, of Dolwyddelan, Conwy, was alleged to have misused clients' money and not paid it into proper accounts.

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal sitting in London yesterday agreed he should be struck off after considering 10 allegations of breaching accounting rules, when he worked as an associate solicitor on the Wirral between 1994 and 1995.

Two years ago, Mr Ross-Jones and his partner, Angela Demontford, then living in Greenfield, near Holywell, walked free from Chester Crown Court after being cleared of unlawfully selling Viagra and prescribing slimming pills.

Mr Ross-Jones did not attend yesterday's tribunal hearing in London due to ill health and had asked for an adjournment, which was refused.

Roger Field, for the Law Society, said he was alleging Mr Ross-Jones was guilty of dishonesty for failing to pay clients' money into client accounts and used their funds for his own and other improper purposes.

The allegations followed an accountant's inspection of the books at the solicitors where Mr Ross-Jones was employed as an associate solicitor.

In one case client CEE paid £500 cash costs which were not paid into the client account.

His explanation was he could not recall any cash or monies paid in, said Mr Field.

Commit tee chairman Stephen Jones said the facts were proved and added: "In-deed the evidence is over-whelming and there is clear evidence of dishonesty."

The committee heard Mr Ross-Jones was indefinitely suspended by the tribunal in 1990 but this was rescinded on appeal by the Master of the Rolls.
