Windmill holiday plans approved

The windmill at Llangoed which is to be converted into a holiday facility

PLANS to convert an 18th century Anglesey windmill into a holiday base have been given the go ahead by island planners just days before the start of a public inquiry.

But so far developers behind the project in Llangoed, a few miles from Beaumaris, have refused to withdraw their appeal.

First they want written confirmation the application has been approved after a year-long battle.

"We are expecting the letter sometime this week, but on the advice of our lawyers we haven't yet called a halt to the inquiry, which is set for next Tuesday," said businessman John Wood.

He is ploughing £100,000 into the development of the windmill which was built in 1742.

The scheme, which will provide holiday accommodation for up to four people, was thrown out because of highways issues last year. Mr Wood lodged an appeal with the National Assembly and then drew up a fresh application featuring road safety improvements which has now been approved by the council's planning committee.

Councillors were warned the authority's highway engineers, who had objected to the first application, could not defend their stance at a public inquiry and they feared they could end up having to pay costs.

Mr Wood said: "There was never a conflict between planning and ourselves. They and the tourist board desperately wanted this to happen. "
