Gadget will stop spiked drink peril

Inventor David Burnell with the anti-tamper device

A NORTH Wales inventor believes he has a solution to the evil practice of date-rape drugs being slipped into unsuspecting revellers' drinks.

David Burnell, from Colwyn Bay, has spent almost six months designing the Drink-guard - a plastic cap which fits on bottles and prevents anything being added to the drink without the drinker knowing.

The plastic cap fits on the bottle and locks when a small 'key' is pulled from it.

When the drinker returns from the bar or toilet, it can be unlocked and a red warning light on the top of the cap lights up if anybody has attempted to remove it.

If the key is lost, the cap can still be removed, but not with-out setting the light off.

The 44-year-old is now looking for investors as he attempts to get the product on the market before Christmas.

He said: "I had the idea watching the news and seeing a story about a girl who had had her drink spiked before being raped. The next story was about fingerprint technology to improve airport security, and I thought about that, but the costs were too high so we went to JDH Consultancy in Eglwysbach.

"Between us we came up with the design of the Drinkguard."
