A HEARTBROKEN couple have told how their 11-day-old daughter was struck down by a rare form of meningitis. Victoria Thomas died in hospital from neo-natal e-coli meningitis - which affects less than 100 children in Britain every year. Victoria's parents, Stephen and Geraldine Thomas, of Waunfawr, near Caernarfon, last night said they wanted to raise awareness of the virus to try to prevent another tragedy. Geraldine, 28, said: "She'd been unsettled all day and not feeding very well. At midnight I decided to try to feed her and she fed really well. I fell asleep with Victoria in my arms because I was exhausted. "I woke up a while later and knew there was something wrong. There was some blood coming from her nose. I called Stephen and we rang 999 and the ambulance control gave us instructions on how to revive her. "The ambulance crews were here very quickly and got her to Ysbyty Gwynedd where they tried to give her antibiotics, but it was too late." Victoria was born without problems and was feeding well until just before her death. Stephen, 37, added: "My main concern is how quickly this happened. My only consolation is that she didn't suffer." |
