Driver fights job loss over sleep disorder

Jul 23 2004

Flintshire Chronicle Series, Llandudno

A TAXI driver with a rare sleeping disorder has been forced to quit his job after his driving licence was revoked.

Frank Morris, 56, of Denbigh Road, Mold, says he was not consulted about the decision and is now fighting to get back on the road.

The former town councillor was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) eight months ago.

'I saw a consultant about the problem, and the next thing I knew I had a letter from the DVLA saying my driving licence had been revoked because of my medical condition,' he said.

'I feel I have been victimised. I was simply not consulted before my licence was taken away.'

Frank says some victims of the medical condition wake up about 20 times a night, then feel drowsy the next day through lack of sleep.

'But I'm not affected in this way, as I'm a bit of an insomniac anyway,' he said.

'I don't fall asleep during the day, so there's no reason why I can't drive - although I accept that I won't be able to work as a taxi driver again.'

Frank now plans to appeal to the DVLA to reinstate his driving licence.

He is seeking a second opinion about his ability to drive with OSA from a professor in Liverpool who specialises in sleep disorders.

'I need to prove I am fit to drive and as far as I'm concerned there's no reason why I shouldn't get my licence back,' he said.

Ironically his wife Donna, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, now has to drive him around.

Frank says the diagnosis has ruined his quality of life, adding: 'I have lost my income as a taxi driver, and that's hit me hard in the pocket.

'My livelihood has gone and I'm really fed up. I have never felt so low in my whole life.

'The whole thing's crazy and my social life has virtually disappeared because I can't drive anywhere.

'My wife has to take me out in her car, so her life has been affected as well.'

The former cabby says he feels completely confident about getting back behind the wheel, but because the medical profession classes everyone with OSA as a potential road safety risk, he was suffering as a consequence.

'I need to assure them I don't doze off in the day,' he added.

'At the moment I'm looking for another job, but being unable to drive means my choice is limited.

'Hopefully it won't be too long before I'm on the road again.'
