Historic mill gains £40,000 grant to get sails turning again

Aug 5 2004

Daily Post

PLANS to restore an 18th century windmill on Anglesey have been given a £40,000 cash boost as part of a National Assembly drive to help save historic buildings.

Melin y Bont, on the Bodorgan estate at Bryn Du near Rhosneigr, was the only corn mill on Anglesey to use both wind and water power. This unique combination meant the sails turned in the opposite direction to dozens of other windmills on the island.

"The money will be used to restore the historic fabric of the windmill, including the internal water wheel," said an Assembly spokesman.

Anglesey earned its reputation as the bread-basket of Wales because so many windmills were built to produce flour from grain grown locally.

Melin y Bont is among nine historic buildings to benefit from a share of nearly £280,000 in grant aid announced by Alun Pugh, minister for culture, Welsh language and sport. The 18th century windmill near Rhosneigr which is to be restored thanks to Assembly cash
