ANGLING - already the biggest participation sport in Britain - has become the number one sport for the disabled in Wales. Assembly and European Objective 1 funds have helped 50 angling clubs and fisheries in Wales to improve facilities. Fishing has proved an invaluable tool in reducing social exclusion amongst disabled people, says Environment Agency Wales. Its sustainable fisheries programme manager, Andy Schofield, said: "The projects will be of benefit to local anglers but also visiting tourists attracted to Wales by the fantastic scenery, warm welcome and superb fishing. "Projects have included the provision of seven wheelyboats in North Wales. Designed for use by anglers in wheelchairs, they will provide opportunities to fish previously inaccessible waters." Up to 10,000 people across Wales and England are expected to try out angling for the first time in more than 100 events for this week's 12th annual National Fishing Week. Richard Wightman angling participation manager at the Environment Agency said: "The work we are doing is transforming access and opportunity in the UK, and the Agency, with its partners, is opening up the sport to all parts of society - fishing is a truly inclusive sport for all." |
