MP furious at activists' Commons invasion

Sep 17 2004

by Caroline Jones, Chester Chronicle Newspapers

ALYN and Deeside MP Mark Tami has slammed protesters who stormed into the House of Commons during a debate on hunting with dogs.

There were ugly scenes during the mass protest outside Parliament in London on Wednesday as MPs backed a ban on hunting in England and Wales by 339 to 155 votes.

And during the Wednesday afternoon debate, four men ran out from behind the speaker's chair, while another wrestled past security from a different entrance.

Mr Tami, who was in Parliament at the time of the incident, said: 'I want to know how they get into Parliament and how they knew their way around. I suspect they've been helped by a pro-hunting MP.

'Yesterday saw the tightest security ever at Westminster, yet still potential terrorists broke into the Commons.'

Mr Tami also accused hunt supporters outside Westminster of being overly aggressive.

There were violent clashes outside Parliament where an estimated 10,000 pro-hunters gathered.

The scenes in the chamber, which forced the sitting to be abandoned for 25 minutes, distracted attention from MPs voting to outlaw fox hunting and hare coursing.

Later, they voted to delay the introduction of the hunting ban from three months to the end of July 2006 - past the last possible date of the general election.

The Bill now goes to the Lords, which is expected to continue to oppose the ban. The Government is then likely to use the Parliament Act to force the measure through.

Hundreds of North Wales Huntsmen, Country Alliance and farmers Union of Wales members travelled to London on Wednesday to protest. The Flint and Denbigh Hunt took more than 50 supporters along.

Among them was Jeremy Read,. He said: 'It's left a very sour taste. I have no confidence in this Government. I'm a professional man but they are treating my livelihood like a political football.

'I felt I had to go to London to make myself heard because my wife and I stand to lose everything.'

Earlier this week Flintshire MPs spoke of their support for the Bill.

Delyn MP, David Hanson, said: 'These pursuits are nothing to do with pest control.

'It is time that they came to end and I know of very few people indeed who will mourn their passing.'

Deputy House of Commons Speaker Sylvia Heal, a former pupil of Ewloe Green Primary and Buckley Elfed High schools, acted in her 'usual laid-back style' when she was confronted by pro-hunt protesters in the chamber.

That was the reaction of her brother Stuart Fox, who lives in Ewloe.

He was watching the debate on the fox hunting bill on television when the protest happened.

'She was very cool,' he said. 'I spoke to her later and she's fine, despite the protest - although obviously she was a little upset.'
