TONY Blair and Labour sent young people to their deaths in an illegal war in Iraq, Plaid Cymru leader Dafydd Iwan said. He turned round Labour criticism of Plaid's bid to impeach the prime minister over the war, claiming it was Mr Blair who had "let our troops down". "I'll tell you what has let our troops down: sending them out to fight an enemy they did not know, that did not pose a threat to this country, without the backing of the United Nations and without proper and adequate equipment. "That was the ultimate betrayal of the young men and women of Wales sent out to Iraq." In an impassioned attack, he said thousands of innocents had lost their lives. "We are now, this very minute, creating sworn enemies of the very people we purported to set free as we ride roughshod over their sacred places," he told the Plaid conference in Llandudno. "Blair and Bush have undermined the authority of the United Nations, have created new enemies all over the world, have shown in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Grhaib utter and total disregard for human rights and human dignity and the principles of the Geneva Convention. "And meanwhile Palestine is burning and the road map to peace in the Middle East lies in tatters. And the threat from international terrorism is consequently worse than ever it was." |
