English city foxes dumped in Wales

Oct 11 2004

By Eryl Crump, Daily Post

URBAN foxes are being collected from the streets of Britain's cities and dumped in remote parts of Wales, claims an English Tory MP.

Last night, Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant called for urgent action as the House of Lords prepares to debate the controversial ban on hunting.

He claimed the urban foxes savage farm animals and pets.

The MP said he was told of the problem during a weekend visit to Snowdonia.

His claims were backed by Nick Smyth of Llwyngwril, near Dolgellau. He said a van full of foxes was found by pro-hunting campaigners in a motor-way car park.

Mr Smyth added: "The driver stated that the animals were being taken to a remote part of the country, where no one lived and no one - in London presumably - had ever heard of, where he said they would do no harm.

"The driver could not pronounce the name of our village."

He said farmers in the Dolgellau area had shot 118 foxes in three months, more than usual.

"How would these people like to come down in the morning and find their pets in a bloody mess on their front lawns?

"This situation is confronted by almost every stock farmer in the country at some time and in this part of the world very frequently.

"Somehow the ignorance of these town-dwellers and misguided dogooders has got to be dispelled," Mr Smyth said.

Mr Fabricant said: "They have little perception of the damage they do to the livelihood and to the livestock which they slaughter."

Mr Fabricant is tabling a House of Commons question to Environment Secretary, Margaret Beckett, asking what evidence she has of this practice and what steps are being taken to stop it.

He added: "Nothing is more upsetting than seeing sheep bleeding to death after being savaged by these imported foxes.

"Farmers tell me they are shooting and snaring an abnormal number of foxes."

The MP's demand comes just days before the anti-hunting bill goes before the House of Lords.

The Countryside Alliance and the Countryside Action Network plans a "national day of defiance" with hunt supporters blocking town centres.

Protests are expected outside the offices of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
