Pilgrimage revived after 600 years

Oct 11 2004

Daily Post

AN ancient pilgrimage in honour of a Welsh abbot who was canonised 1,500 years ago was revived in North Wales this weekend.

St Cybi, whose name forms part of the town's Welsh name, Caergybi, is thought to have set up a church inside Holyhead's Roman fort in the sixth century.

Saturday's pilgrimage, which attracted around 200 people, was the first since 1405, when St Cybi's remains were taken to Ireland.

Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist and Pentecostal denominations were represented on a tour of the town's Millennium Cross and services at parish churches.

A "walk behind the Cross" then led pilgrims to the Jerusalem Garden, buffet lunch and bilingual celebration at the Ucheldre Centre.
