Luke's fate will be decided in two days

HEALTH officials will decide in the next two days whether to press ahead with a High Court bid to stop treating dying baby Luke Winston-Jones.

Doctors at Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital are considering asking a judge to rule on life-saving treatment for the nine-month-old child.

Doctors yesterday held a second day of talks about the future of the youngster, born with three holes in his heart.

An Alder Hey spokeswoman said a decision on a High Court application would be made in the next 48 hours.

"Luke is a patient currently receiving treatment at the Royal Liverpool Children's Trust for a very rare and complex illness.

"Doctors and nurses at the trust have explained to his parents the extremely poor outlook for Luke."

She added: "Rare cases such as this present a real ethical dilemma.

"Where there is a significant difference of opinion between paediatric medical specialists and parents, it may be necessary to put all the facts before a court for proper and impartial consideration. This is a difficult time for Luke's family and the doctors and nurses who are treating him.

"The trust is actively supporting the parents and will be reviewing the position carefully over the next 48 hours."
