Can you give a home to a trainee guide-dog?

Jan 12 2005

Daily Post

A CHARITY is searching for foster homes in North Wales for puppies training to become guide dogs for deaf people.

It is desperately short of people willing to look after the young dogs amid increasing applications.

The call by Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is echoed by 59-year-old Emily Bush from Wrexham, who said her labrador Cassy had become her "lifeline" over the past six years.

Hearing Dogs trains pups to alert deaf people to everyday sounds like the doorbell, telephone and alarm clock.

"They are also taught to respond to danger signals such as the smoke alarm and fire bell.

The dogs are usually rescued abandoned and unwanted pets, looked after by volunteers while they are being trained.

But the charity says it is particularly desperate for temporary homes in the Anglesey and Gwynedd areas.

Mrs Bush said, as one of the recipients, she hoped people in the region would be able to aid the charity with their work.

She said: "Cassy has turned my life upside-down, inside out, back-to-front and head-over-heels.

"I can never thank her, the people who socialised her, the people who sponsored her, the people who trained her - and then gave her to me - enough.." * Anybody interested in taking on a rescue dog can contact Hearing Dogs on 01844 348105.
